In Mid April 2012, it was revealed that crates containing components for up to 20 Spitfires may have been located in Burma. The aircraft, which had never been assembled or flown, had been sent to Burma in 1945, only to be buried at airfields around Burma by the RAF, to prevent them falling into the hands of the Japanese. The possible locations were identified using radar technology, combined with the recollections of a Second World War veteran who witnessed the operation to hide the planes, which were then struck off RAF registers.[1]
